Yaesu Battery Charger NC-72B getting hot?
The adapter is getting really hot. The input 120V 60Hz 12W – output 12V DC 500mA is the adapter brand. My radio is a Vertex VX-150.
Is there a defect?
where in the world are you?
if in the UK, its a wonder the thing hasn’t blown up!
if in the USA – look on the back of the radio you are powering from the adapter and look at it’s power consumption it will say something like ” input 12VDC 900mW” or 750VA or 0.5A or 500mA this Will tell you if you are over running the adapter another test would be to leave the adapter plugged in WITHOUT plugging it into the radio –
In general, adapters tend to run warm but should not run hot

NiCds offer up to around 500 cycles, although this is very dependent upon the way they are used. A badly treated cell may only give 50 or 100. NiMH cells are even worse, and this is one of the main areas receiving development. They are only able to give 500 cycles at the very best before their capacity drops to 80% of the initial charge rating.
Lithium-ion batteries are good to use in retail, aviation, hospitality as it is often necessary to work overtime and where light weight and high capacity batteries are required.
Manufacturers also suggest two way radio models where we can use different types of batteries for using them in different conditions, for example new TK-2140/3140 Kenwood radios offer a choice of Ni-Cd, Ni-MH and Li-Ion battery packs for various uses. Substituting lithium-ion with nickel-based will require chargers specifically suited for this chemistry. While nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal-hydride can often share the same charger, lithium-ion uses a different charge algorithm.
