Finding a Good LED Flashlight for Patrol

Let’s face it, with so many flashlights in the market to choose from today, it can be difficult to find “the” one that is just right. No one ever likes to think they are making a poor choice when they make a purchase, but; it never seems to fail, shortly after you buy something, you’ll see something you like more.

For many police officers, flashlights are provided by their departments and they don’t get a choice, for others, it’s a personal choice and finding the right light can be daunting. Regardless if you are the officer making a decision for a SWAT team, a new cadet buying your first flashlight or an old road dog upgrading your incandescent light that’s seen better days, thinking about what you will do with that light will help point you in the right direction.

What do you mean what will I do with it? I’m going to light things up, dummy! Well, you’re right; you will light things up with it; but, how, where, when and why? When you are armed with the answers to these questions, you will be able to make a better choice for your needs; that way, when your buddy shows up and you begin to think he got something better, you won’t be second guessing your first choice.

For police work there are three types of lights; weapon mounted, vehicle mounted and those that are carried personally. People usually think of personally carried lights when they think of a flashlight. Weapon mounted lights have very special uses and an officer that has a weapon mounted light, even on a pistol, should also have a personally carried light as well. Pointing a “loaded flashlight” at an old lady with chest pain just isn’t cool. So let’s discuss personally carried lights and leave the vehicle and weapon mounted lights for another time.

It used to be one size fits most, when it came to flashlights. Today, if you have the budget and the arm strength, you can buy a high intensity discharge (HID) handheld light that puts out 5000 lumens for over 110 minutes; you can also buy a light you put on your keychain with a pushbutton LED that will last about 1000 hours and provide enough light to read your favorite novel. A 5000 lumen light would be great for search and rescue and a pushbutton LED would be great for a sniper that was referring to windage charts in low light. Somewhere between the aircraft landing light and the reading light there is a light suitable to your task.

For police work a light must be dependable, it doesn’t matter how bright it is supposed to be if it doesn’t work. A good light for patrol should run for at least 90 minutes on its highest setting before needing fed new batteries. Rechargeable batteries are always a good upgrade, when your light can accept them. If you go the rechargeable route make sure you invest in the best rechargeable batteries you can buy; your life may depend on them.

Brightness is also an important factor. If you are new to LED light technology, figure 80 lumens is brighter than older flashlights with 4 D Cell batteries. How bright is too bright? Well, if you are in low light or darkness, are you looking for bad guys? There are lights out now that are 400 to 500 lumens, that’s bright! However; with that much light, you could easily toast your low light vision and the bad guys for that matter and you are probably going to have enough backwash (light reflecting off everything in the room) to light up yourself as well.

I’m not against lights that are that bright; but, sometimes too much isn’t just right. Also consider as the lumens go up, the runs times go down and the light requires more batteries to feed its hunger for power. For me, 80 to 200 lumens is the neighborhood I look for in a good patrol light. 80 to 200 lumens is brighter than anything we have ever had access to, it is plenty of light to light up even the biggest of rooms we search and it is not so much light that we blind ourselves or silhouette ourselves in the process.

Along with the brightness comes adjustability. Having an LED light set to its highest setting isn’t required all the time. When you just need a “little” light for a task, having the ability to turn the light down is a must. Lower settings help conserve your low light vision and it saves on battery life as well. Most LED lights have several settings to adjust the light. The more the better; but be sure the light you consider has immediate access to the brightest setting so it can be accessed if a threat suddenly pops up. You don’t want to be fumbling with a light switch if you’re trying to acquire a bad guy.

A strobe function is also a good addition to a patrol light. If you are not familiar with “strobing,” it is a feature on today’s newest lights. Flashing a strobe light into the eyes of a subject in low light has been shown to disorient them, sometimes to the point of making them physically sick. For the user, being behind the light, the same untoward effects are not felt. The strobe can be a dramatic, intimidating tactic in low light. Like the adjustability; if your new light is going to have a strobe feature, it needs to be immediately accessible in a crisis situation.

The ability to carry the light also must be considered. For years, flashlights have been a round tube with the light at one end, the batteries stacked behind the light head and a switch on the tube or on the tail cap. New developments have changed the way we carry our lights, as well. There are lights you can clip on your shirt pocket or lapel, there are even lights you can wear on your head.

One company has designed a flashlight that is worn on the hand so both of your hands are free while using the light. To me this is an interesting concept. Think about this for a minute; if you are on a traffic stop in low light, do you have your light out? What are you going to do with that light if you need to demonstrate field sobriety tests? Write a ticket? Handcuff the subject? You are going to do what we all do, stick the light in your mouth (if it’s small enough), stick it in your belt or stick it under your arm. What about shooting at night? We all have our favorite flashlight technique for shooting a night; but, if the gun malfunctions or we need to reload, the light goes right into our mouths or under our arm.

Having a light on your hand and not in your hand is the biggest advance in flashlight technology I have seen to date. With this latest addition to the law enforcement field; a good patrol light should have the ability to be used and keep both hands free for other tasks as well.

You are now armed with the information you need to go forth and find a new light suited for police work. To summarize; the light should: run for at least 90 minutes on new batteries without a recharge, be 80 to 200 lumens in strength, be adjustable from full power to low power with instant access to the highest setting; have a strobe function with instant access and have the ability to keep both of your hands free while the light is in use. This a pretty tall order for a good patrol light. They are out there, just spend some time to find the light that is right for you; your life could depend on it.

The Retriever: Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Chesapeake Bay Retriever has a nick name called Chessie.  They originate from Britain and they beat the Labrador in retrieving. They are really big and strong.  They can retrieve even through ice as they are very tough, and they have the capacity to go for hunting even if the weather condition is very bad.  They are known to catch ducks, on the Chesapeake Bay which has rough and icy waters.

The normal weight of the Chessie is around 60 to 90 pounds and the height is around 21 to 26 inches.  These dogs have a magnificent look, as they are hugely built with strong bones.  Their coat is actually waterproof, they sweep their neck, loins and back beautifully, and when you compare their coat to other breeds, they are kind of oily and smells of musk at times.  Their normal color ranges from light brown to deep brown or in other words something similar to the color of the sedge, which again goes from yellow to faded tan.  Sometimes they have nice spots on the coat.  These Chesapeake’s are wonderful swimmers, because they are gifted with toes which are webbed and tough hind legs.

They are well known for their intellect and approach.  They have a good sense of smell and are very affectionate. Most of the times, their happiness is mistaken to be a growl, as the Chessie usually shows his happiness through barking. Another uniqueness which this breed possesses is that, they show their front teeth and smile to show they are happy. Any other dog breed does this act in order to threat.  By nature these dogs are very commanding and combative towards other dogs. And there are not extremely assertive either. When training is provided to them, they have to be taught to obey from the very early days, to make him understand that he is not the boss.  If this is not done, training them at later stages would be very difficult.

This breed of dogs, usually gets very attached to one person in the house, and consider him to be the master, and thinks everybody else are inferior or equal to him, other than the master. He thinks that there is only one master, and he is the person, to whom he is well attached. When it comes to strangers, the Chessie is intense and restrained.  Some of the other retrievers like the Labrador are quite friendly with strangers.  This kind of behavior is mainly because they are biased to be sectional.

They are very fast in learning things and are extremely witted. You can expect what you want from these dogs; they are good at performing what the master wants. They never disappoint you. If they are trained well, they abide by the rules. They do not misbehave.

They love eating meat, with some biscuits.  They can consume around 1.5 to 2.5 cans of them.  They also have dog food which is rich in minerals and vitamins. These dog foods are easily available at every pet store.

OK, the situation is I have a N95 and apart from sending it into Carphone warehouse for repairs adjectives the time, and it keeps on coming put money on as network problem and when we ring O2 they said that within is absoutely no issues in the nouns. I currently dont have a cellphone, and I required to get one as an added queue on my sister’s plan. Im pretty sure she has unlimited paper, but Im not sure how many minutes she have. The hunt began while Barbara’s mother played the piano. They hunted fast and furious, as long as the music continued. When the music stopped they stopped in their tracks. If anyone moved after the music stopped or if he dropped his partners hands while hunting, he was disqualified. The team finding the most hearts won the game.

After the excitement of the “Heart Hunt” Barbara passed out a dozen candy hearts to each guest the kind that bears a sentimental or slang expression. She offered a prize to the one making the most complete sentence from the words on the hearts. Some fast trading of hearts went on, as the youngsters tried to get candies with expressions that would fit together. This game proved to be very lively entertainment.

For the next game the group was divided into two teams. Each team formed a circle. In the center of each circle Barbara put a large pie tin on the floor. Then she passed to each a paper plate for a fan. In the one circle she sprinkled red tissue-paper hearts all over the floor. In the other circle she used white tissue-paper hearts. At a signal everyone started fanning with the plate, trying to blow the hearts into the pie tins. This game was very hilarious because the harder the fanning the higher the hearts flew. And they blew out of the pie tin almost easier than they blew in. The team with the most hearts in the pan after ten windy minutes won the game.

In the wide arched doorway between the living and dining room Barbara’s mother hung about a foot apart a number of red cardboard hearts from strings of varying length. One at a time, each guest was blindfolded, given a pair of scissors, turned around three times and told to snip a heart. Then her partner of the “Heart Hunt” game held a short piece of string the end of which was fastened around the blinded guest’s wrist. The partner could say nothing, but tried to guide his partner toward the hearts with small tugs at the string. The team snipping down the most hearts won the game.

The youngsters were fascinated with the valentine supper which concluded the party. Pink ham decorated with white potato salad heart, and heart-shaped red Jello salad carried out the color scheme. White heart shaped sandwiches and tall glasses of milk added the filling. Dessert was a brick of white ice cream with molded pink hearts in the center.

After the party Barbara agreed with her mother that next best to lots of brothers and sisters were lots of friends for making valentines.

Homeowner Charlotte Hamilton already had a large deck for entertaining. What she wanted was a spot where she could be alone and relax with a book. She chose a spot under some shady oak trees in her side yard (figure B).

Landscape designer Deborah Kuchar of Big

Time Gardening designed a redwood bench and planter combo that fit in well with Hamilton’s rustic redwood house, as well as the woodsy side yard. She says that placing a bench in an enclosed setting buffered by trees or landscaping creates a feel of seclusion or intimacy, but this bench would work just as well in an open area overlooking a focal point. Her design includes a natural pebble base for the bench, surrounded by plants, lush greenery and cedar mulch.

Kuchar estimates that a professional would charge about $1,500 for materials and labor (not including plants), but do-it-yourselfers could cut their costs to only $300. This project, which requires basic carpentry skills, is rated a 3 on a difficulty scale of 1 (easy) to 5 (difficult) and can be completed in two weekends.

Master Carpenter Tim Rice of Rice Construction says you’ll need a circular saw, jigsaw, saber saw, biscuit joiner and router–all available for rent at hardware stores–to build the bench/planter combo.

Step One: Building the Frames

Use rot-resistant, pressure-treated 2″ x 6″ fir planks for the bottom frames since they will be placed on the ground, and use redwood for the two top frames. Figure B shows a diagram of the bench.

To give the planters a half-moon curve, cut three fir planks 14 inches long, each with a 30-degree angle on each end. Be sure to measure precisely as you go so that the pieces fit together well. Lay out the cut planks so that the angles fit snuggly (figure C).

Add a 2×4 cut to 27 inches to form the inner edge of the frame. Notch the ends of the planks with a biscuit joiner, and fit the pieces together with biscuit joints. Use a measuring tape anchored with a nail in the middle of the 2×4 to draw the outer arch with an 11-1/4″ radius. Draw the inner arch 2 inches in from the outer arch. Cut along the lines with a jigsaw. Piece the frame together by joining the pieces with wood glue and drive in 3-inch galvanized screws. Figure D shows a completed frame. Use the first frame as a template for marking the inner and outer arches of the other bottom frame and the two redwood top frames. Complete the other frames as you did the first frame.

Step Two: Building the Shelves

The shelves will be hidden inside the planters, so use a lower-grade redwood. Set a bottom frame on top of four 2×4s placed side by side, and trace the outer shape of the frame onto the planks. Cut out the curves with a jigsaw. Use wood glue and biscuit joints to hold the planks together. Screw two 2″ x 2″ braces to the underside of the shelf. Drill six holes through the shelf for drainage (figure E). Make another shelf for the other planter.

I have worked in the social service industry for several years. Through the years I have worked in large and small agencies and I have worked in the private as well as the public sector. Each agency has advantages and disadvantages. In larger agencies they tend to have the social workers specialize in one certain area whether that is adult services or child services. If the agency serves a large population then you specialize within those categories as well such as mental health, protection, developmental disabilities or physical disabilities. Regardless of what area you specialize in it is helpful to know how to access all services.

At this point in my career I am working for a private agency serving people that have been homeless. In order to qualify for the program you have to be staying in a shelter and one person in the family has to have a disability of some sort. Also we serve families where at least one person is under the age of eighteen. This is a challenging case management position because I need to know a wide variety of services. On any given day I can do everything from report child abuse to helping people find transportation. A few weeks ago one of the clients had saved enough money to be able to but a vehicle. He asked me to help him locate caravans for sale. He had under a thousand dollars to spend. The program is located in a rural area so we needed to find caravans for sale within a fifty mile radius of the program so that I would not have to spend a great deal of case management time driving him all over looking at different vans.

We entered the criteria that he was looking for. He wanted a caravan because he has owned them in the past and he knows they have reliable engines. He is a tall man with a bad back so the van is an easy vehicle for him to get in and out of. We found three caravans for sale that were within twenty miles of the program. Two were for sale by private owners and one was at a used car dealer. We made arrangements to see the three caravans for sale and he selected the one with the lowest miles. He was impressed with the way we had been able to use the internet to access the vehicles. He was also glad that I knew what questions to ask regarding transferring of titles and other things. I never know what skills or knowledge I am going to need when I go to work in the morning. At times this can be frustrating, but it keeps the job from being dull.
