What is the most realistic signal range in the suburbs?
If you operate the units on the FRS only channels the power is limited so you may only get 1 to 1.5 mile range.(Usually advertised as 2 miles). In order to operate at full power on the FRS/GMRS channels or the GMRS channels, a license is required from the FCC, but should get you an 8 mile range. (advertised as ‘up to 12 mile’ range for the SX700R).
FCC license is good for 5 years but costs $80 – $90.
